A Chinese woman who slapped a Trelawny school girl in a viral video has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm. The incident occurred on December 7 at a store on Main Street in Clarks Town. The 53-year-old woman, identified as Yuemei Pan, was arrested the same day after she allegedly grabbed the teen and slapped her in the face.

53-year-old Yuemei Pan set free

A Chinese national at the centre of a video that went viral of her slapping a 13-year-old school girl she accused of stealing from her grocery store in Clarks Town, Trelawny has been freed from court after she appeared on Wednesday as no evidence was offered. Yuemei Pan, who operates a shop on Main Street in the community, was arrested on December 7 for assault occasioning bodily harm. She was charged after a video of her slapping the girl and yelling expletives at her surfaced online.

The 53-year-old, who is a mother of two, was later visited by dancehall artiste Mr Vegas and some members of the community and she apologised to the girl saying that it was a misunderstanding and that her actions were regrettable. She was also captured on camera embracing the girl. The girl’s father also came out to support the woman, stating that his daughter is a straight-A student who did not steal anything from her.

Grandmaster Pan is a renowned martial arts practitioner who has been trained in a number of internal Chinese martial art systems. She has been a teacher and an administrator at the martial arts club since 1998, and her students have won numerous awards. She has also been involved in film and television acting, receiving best actress nominations at the Golden Rooster Awards and Hundred Flowers Awards.

She is known to have a strong sense of social responsibility and has helped many people in the community over the years. Her efforts have been recognised by a number of local organisations, including the YWCA. She was awarded the prestigious YWCA’s Women of Distinction award in 2011.

In other crime news, 56-year-old Sylvia Brown of Moorefield District in Wakefield, surrendered to the police on Tuesday. She was previously wanted in connection with the murder of her husband, 59-year-old fisherman David Brown of the same address. She is expected to be charged later this week.

Meanwhile, 23-year-old Romario Jarrett of Martha Brae, in the parish of Trelawny, has been charged with raping a woman in February. It is reported that he was driving the woman home when he parked along River Road, in Martha Brae and sexually assaulted her. He was arrested on Monday and is awaiting a court date. The police have also charged a man, also from Trelawny, with the sexual assault of a 61-year-old woman on Friday. The victim was attacked at her home in the St James community of Mount Carmel. The attacker reportedly used a piece of board to strike the victim in the face, and left her tied up in a yam field. The man has been arrested and is awaiting a court date.

Trelawny bus driver charged

A bus driver from Trelawny is reportedly dead after being attacked at his home. The man is identified as Robert Dawkins, who was pounced on by unknown assailants on Saturday morning. Police say he was at his gate washing the Toyota Coaster bus which he operates, when he was attacked. Attempts by the deceased to escape were unsuccessful, and he was shot in the chest. The 61-year-old deportee from Sherwood Content, Trelawny was taken to hospital where he died. Police are awaiting the results of a post mortem examination before drawing any conclusions.

The police said that about 11:50 p.m. on February 8, Jarrett was taking the victim home when he parked at a section of River Road in Martha Brae and climbed over to the back seat where she was sitting. The police say they have a video of the incident.

Two men have been charged with murder in the death of 68-year-old Karl Patrick Senior, also known as ‘Pat’, of Kettering district in Trelawny. They are 20-year-old Damion Griffiths, also known as ‘Likkle’ and 38-year-old Andre Humphrey, otherwise called ‘Driver’, both of East Red Dirt District in Duncans, Trelawny. They are due to appear in the Trelawny Parish Court on Thursday.
